question:What is the most misunderstood picture that has become famous (or infamous)?
answer:This is the most misunderstood photo in the history of Bangladesh which has become one of many tools for the propaganda related to our Independence war in 1971. We all know that the history is written by the victors. Well, after we won the war, many ultra-nationalist and secularist intellectuals started propagating about the independence war. This photo was one of the many things that are still very well known and widely circulated in Bangladesh to exaggerate the erstwhile situation and fuel the propaganda machine a lot more. This photo has been circulated all over Bangladesh to show the inhuman nature of the then Pakistani army by implying that the Pakistani army was so ruthless and racist that they didn’t even hesitate to check the circumcision of the common people as a way to identify and separate the Hindu people from the general mass. It shows a Pakistani soldier checking inside the lungi of a man to see whether he is Hindu or Muslim, and if he is Hindu, he will probably be taken away to be killed. This very picture must be very familiar to all Bangladeshis. It was also indicated that the picture was taken while the war was still going on. Its a very common image, and quite successfully it was burned into the minds of Bangladeshis as an example of typical Pakistani/Islamic brutality, intolerance and backwardness. Actually, it is a photo taken by Mr. Kishore Parekh, a famous Indian photographer and the photo was taken after we won the war and became an independent country- Bangladesh. The picture is from a book by the photographer called "Bangladesh- A Brutal Birth". The soldier in the photo was actually an Indian soldier who was checking the arrested Rajakar members (local collaborator of the Pakistani army) whether they had any arms hidden inside their lungi. However, the fact is that the picture ISN'T of a Pakistani soldier at all, but an Indian soldier "checking for weapons". The real caption of the photo is like this: So, this is the most misunderstood photo in the history of Bangladesh.
question:the response to Ponniyin Selvan II movie a slipper shot given by the audience to the artificial hype created on Mani Ratnam?
answer:I read Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan for the first time, as a novice. I didn’t know much about Tamil history. Don’t blame me, I wasn’t taught much of Tamil history at that age. And in fact, all Tamils of my generation learnt Tamil history from Kalki’s historical fiction and consequent fact finding thereafter. The movie cannot be understood by anyone who’s unfamiliar with the books, the context and basic Tamil history from those times. This is not a movie that you can follow without effort. I will give you an example. There’s a scene in PS2 when Vanthiya Thevan is caught by the Pandiya Abatthu Udhavigal and Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) is interrogating him. To buy time and save his head, VV makes small talk and offers information on Nandini’s mother in exchange for his life. He says and I quote, ‘In Thanjavur, you look like the Pazhuvur Queen but in these woods, you look like the Pandiya Queen’. And then you see Nandini draped in a all green, from head to toe. That’s when it strikes you that VV notices Nandini wearing green with the Pandiya team. For, green is the colour of the Pandiya dynasty. Like CSK dons yellow. And why’s that? Madurai Meenakshi wears green. Has a green parrot. And it is said that she was her deity was made of emerald. Now, look at the popular representation of Madurai Meenakshi Amman and even the colours of the Meenakshi Temple Gopuram .. green, green, green. And as I had mentioned in another answer of mine, when I hear Nambi say, ‘Do you think all the Buddhist bhikshus here are real bhikshus?’, i get transported to Sivakamiyin Sabadham, another book from Kalki. Don’t know Tamil history? Don’t watch it! It’s like watching Chennai 28 without understanding cricket.
question:Why do Arabs (mainly in Saudi Arabia and Gulf States) prefer to sleep in the morning and do activities or work at night?
answer:I’ve been living in the golf for the last 15 years between Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia so I believe I have the means to answer this question. In UAE, it is usually a business city and most people living in UAE are here for business. Of course there are a lot of tourists so you see many interactions between tourists and residents. The general rule in UAE is you work hard and play hard. In Kuwait there are many government jobs so you see a lot of work being done in the morning and many locals hanging out in local cafés in the evening. So I don’t see that work is done in the evening except for some exceptional scenarios. In Saudi Arabia on the other hand, a lot of work gets done in the evening. Of course there’s a lot of day jobs but companies are very flexible and they allow people to come into work later in the day and work until evening. The culture is quite different in Saudi Arabia so it is not unusual for people to work at night and sleeping during the day. of course there are a lot of the jobs that carry out the 9-to-5 jobs but it is not uncommon that there are people that work flexible hours especially during these days of Covid.
